    Dr. Carlo Ercoli

    Lecture Synopsis

Dental implants provide a safe and predictable treatment option for many patients, regardless if they are missing a tooth or are completely edentulous. However, all cases are not created equal and each patient requires individualized attention to the patient systemic, but especially local factors. It is indeed common that the majority of failures and complications are due to inadequate consideration, by the clinician, of how treatment planning, esthetics, soft tissue characteristics and biomaterials interact to provide predictable outcomes. In this sense, digital technology provides a unique opportunity to bundle these factors together both in the diagnostic and therapeutic phases of implant treatment and better ensure successful treatment outcomes.

This presentation will review how digital technology, biomaterial, prosthodontic restoration design and soft tissue esthetics interact and how to efficiently and judiciously apply these concepts, in your practice, from single implants to full-arch prostheses. The relevance of prosthetic design, efficient digital workflows, soft and hard tissue grafting and the interaction with prosthetic biomaterials will be highlighted and assessed within a framework of efficient, evidence-based care delivery.

    Lecture Synopsis

This full day hands on course is focused on covering all steps involved in designing and performing advanced additive direct composite restorations. We will practice wax-up design of such cases and work our way to making matrixes that will guide our restorations. All participants will perform a complex layered anterior composite, matching natural tooth morphology and color. We will learn advance layering and internal characterization together with texture and finishing of composite restorations on hyper realistic models.

    Dr. Effie Habsha

    Lecture Synopsis

The aim of Prosthodontic rehabilitation is to provide patients with functional and aesthetic restorations.  New materials and technologies are continually being developed and introduced into the marketplace. The general practitioner is often faced with the difficult task of deciphering between available products and treatment workflows.  Navigating through the maze of materials and clinical workflows can be quite daunting.

This presentation will help the clinician navigate through the choices. A concise review of dental ceramics will be provided with specific attention to the difference between bonding and cementation of ceramic and zirconia-based restorations.  Preparation guidelines, cementation protocols, indications and contraindications for all ceramic restorations in tooth borne and implant supported restorations will be provided.  Incorporated into the presentation will be a review of current cements, impression materials as well as an overview of digital impressions used in a modern prosthodontic practice. The lecture will also review the most recent advances in digital dentistry. The evolution of digital technologies in Dentistry is changing the way clinicians practice. Digital technology is incorporated into many aspects of dentistry including radiography, computer-aided implant dentistry, CAD/CAM manufacturing of restorations, occlusion and TMJ analysis and digital impression making. This presentation will summarize current concepts in digital technologies in prosthodontics and implant surgery, as well as the incorporation of intraoral scanners in both conventional crown and bridgework and implant dentistry.  This presentation will include numerous clinical examples in which the techniques described are demonstrated.  Key insights in achieving predictable and aesthetic outcomes will be outlined as well as the required interdisciplinary communication between the dentist, specialist and laboratory technician.

    Dr. William Martin

    Lecture Synopsis

Emphasis on positive treatment and esthetic outcomes for implant-based care is at the forefront of clinical practice and patient demands. Predictable treatment success for our implant patients is reliant on many factors including, comprehensive assessment and planning, the quality of the implant site and tissue response, selection of appropriate implants and components as well as restoration design and materials. This program will emphasize these factors and incorporate emerging technology in creating the seamless digital workflow. The program will commence with a detailed review of esthetic principles as they relate to implant patients, in addition to “keys to success” in diagnosis and planning for implant rehabilitations. Pretreatment risk assessments will be considered, along with patient classification and proposed treatment difficulty. The importance of a “crown-down” philosophy from evaluation to surgical procedures, including implant selection, will be detailed, including the prosthetic management of peri-implant tissues to maximize esthetic outcomes. Lastly, implant and restorative alternatives will be detailed through patient presentations for patients missing single teeth to full arch restorations. Recent advances in implant and component design will be discussed as they relate to treatment outcomes, including the incorporation of all ceramic, additive manufacturing and CAD-CAM options. To maximize participant experience, treatment complications will be highlighted as well as success.

    Dr. Steve Sadowsky

    Lecture Synopsis

When osseointegration was introduced to North America in 1982, it was a disruptive breakthrough that radically changed the landscape of patient treatment planning. As with any innovative discovery, the process of heuristics has led to false assumptions. In this case, the core belief was implants are like teeth, but without a PDL.  Confirmation bias has buttressed this theory as well as “conventional wisdom.” The impact of such a case of mistaken identity has been implant overtreatment. Drawing on evidence rather than intuition, the following questions need to be addressed: When three teeth are missing,

should we place one implant per tooth, or could we place two implants to support a fixed partial prosthesis or even a cantilever prosthesis? Are short implants a viable option, even when the crown to implant ratio is up to 2 to 1?  Should adjacent implants be splinted to preserve marginal bone? Can tilted implants be used to circumvent sinus augmentation? Do narrow implants have a place in the posterior arch as well as in the anterior sextant? When considering screw-retained or cement-retained implant restorations, what are the guidelines for optimal design? In addition, understanding histologically that teeth offer a far more robust defense system to a biological threat than their root analogues, it is important to explain why peri-implant disease is so ubiquitous and refractory to treatment. Here another novel intervention is needed to improve the success of Branemark’s brainchild.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Debunk the myth that implants are similar to teeth
    2. Elucidate evidence-based implant treatment planning and clinical protocols
    3. Understand how to minimize peri-implant disease
    4. Consider a novel approach for peri-implantitis

Evidence-based Implant Restoration of the Completely Edentulous Patient

    Presentation Abstract

For the edentulous patient, fundamental principles of complete denture prosthodontics serve as the basis for differential treatment planning both fixed and removable implant prostheses.  Understanding the relevant extraoral and intraoral landmarks to assess where the teeth once were is essential for esthetic, phonetic and occlusal harmony.  Both clinician- and patient-mediated considerations dictate the optimal implant prosthesis. There is a myriad of prevailing myths regarding the implant overdenture treatment modality that will be dispelled. The complete arch fixed implant prosthesis has evolved from an analogue workflow to a digital one with stackable guides that have improved the accuracy and efficiency of the surgical and interim restorative process. However, chronic maintenance problems with traditional prosthetic prototypes have given rise to innovations in materials processed with subtractive or additive manufacturing. The advance of polyjet 3D printing of a novel high-performance polymer offers a polychromatic monolithic prosthesis to the digital restorative menu.

    Learning Objectives

    1.     Review complete denture principles considering esthetic and functional harmony

    2.     Understand differential treatment planning of fixed and removable implant prostheses

    3.     Debunk the myths pervasive with implant overdenture rehabilitation

    4.     Discuss evolution of innovative materials and process for the complete arch fixed implant prosthesis
